"So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet:
'I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.'"
Matthew 13:35 (NIV) & Psalms 78:2
Did you know the Earth wasn't formed in six days, as many Christian fundamentalists claim? What if I told you the Bible proves that?
Reading with an open mind is important. In order to gain a stronger understanding of the contents and/or concept, you must suspend prejudices and preconceived ideas on a subject you've encountered before.
Matthew 13:34-35 states that Jesus spoke in parables to the multitude gathered to hear him. A parable is a figurative/symbolic story that uses metaphors and/or relevant events to convey a larger concept or truth.
Several of the parables Jesus used confused and offended many people, leading them to turn away from his teachings in favor of easier to understand ones. Jesus used parables in his teachings for several reasons, which we will discuss in future posts.
Now that we’ve addressed the usage of parables to hide concepts and realities since the creation of the world (Matthew 13:35; Psalms 78:2), let us shift into the topic of the creation story in Genesis.
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
Genesis 1:1-5 (NIV)
'Let there be light,' and there was light.' What is this light? Is it the sun? The universe itself? If so, how could the Earth be created and have water if the Sun did not exist? What about the other planets? It is easy to say, “Oh, it’s just not in the order of creation. It is the sun.” However, let’s view the verse about the creation of the Sun, Moon, and Stars:
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
Genesis 1: 14-19 (NIV)
These verses clearly state the order of creation and in this order, the earth, water, dry ground, the formation of seas, and vegetation are created before the sun, moon, and stars. If this is a literal meaning, how is this possible?
Does this mean that the Bible contradicts itself? Or does this mean teachers of this passage of the Bible have missed the figurative meaning behind the creation story? Also, what about dinosaurs? :)
The Bible doesn’t contradict scientific theories about the age of the earth or the universe. It is the misinterpretation of scripture that contradicts the Bible.
